SEMO’s Student Government Association (SGA) met to approve funding for the Percussion Club of SEMO’s Nov. 9 conference and swore two new senators into the organization.

Percussion Club member Maddi McGuire presented the organization's funding request to SGA. The funding approved by the board amounted to $800 for the eight members going to the conference. SGA Treasurer Heather Hoffman said the amount would cover half of the student’s registration costs for their conference.

The club will be attending the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). McGuire said the conference will be a great learning opportunity and an “eye opening experience” for everyone involved. The experience will include learning about the intricacies of more niche instruments other than drum and mallet instruments.

“There’s a masterclass about tambourine, and it may seem like such a small instrument but there’s a lot that goes into it,” McGuire said.

The PASIC conference will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana from Nov. 9 through 12.

SGA also filled two senator seats, one for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the other for College of Education, Health and Human Studies for the 2022-2023 academic year.

SGA President Joel Philpott swore in communications major Faith Elfrink as College of Humanities and Social Sciences senator and pre-nursing major Tanyaradzwa Vanessa Mugota as College of Education, Health and Human Studies senator. Elfrink explained why she wanted to join SGA.

“I’m planning on going to law school and I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn about policies,” Elfrink said.

For more info about SGA you can find it on their SEMO webpage.
