At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 3 an object appeared in the sky above Cape Girardeau. According to the United States Department of Defense, the object is a Chinese surveillance balloon, and was first seen traveling over Montana. In a Department of Defense briefing transcript, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters that the balloon has the ability to move purposefully. He also said it is expected to continue moving across the United States for the next few days...
A suspected Chinese surveillance balloon can be seen traveling over Cape Girardeau at approximately 5:15 p.m. The balloon was spotted by Mass Media professor Sarah Cavanah, and she took a video of the balloon on Franklin Street behind Southeast Hospital.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 3 an object appeared in the sky above Cape Girardeau. According to the United States Department of Defense, the object is a Chinese surveillance balloon, and was first seen traveling over Montana.

In a Department of Defense press briefing transcript, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters that the balloon has the ability to move purposefully. He also said it is expected to continue moving across the United States for the next few days.

The Department of Defense also reported any use of force to take the balloon down could result in surrounding communities being put at risk.
