The SEMO women’s basketball team defeated Morehead State at the Show Me Center on Saturday, Feb. 11, 69-55.

The Redhawks started off strong, winning the tip off and hitting a quick three-pointer, giving them the momentum they needed for the rest of the game.

The team dominated Morehead State for most of the game showing lots of physicality and grit.

While the Redhawks were slightly outsized by their opponent, they outrebounded the other team 35 to 28.

“We just understand that rebounding is a part of winning,” Coach Rekha Patterson said.

Aside from rebounding, the team shot 13-14 from the free throw line, and 36.4% from the three- point line. The Redhawks shot the ball well, and the scoring was spread evenly throughout the players.

During the second quarter, the Redhawks lost their lead as the Eagles gained some energy.

Sophomore guard Jaliyah Green, who scored a game-high 15 points, stepped up and led the team on a 12-2 run to take a nine-point lead going into the half.

Junior guard Rahmena Henderson received recognition for being named player of the game after her strong second-half performance. She put up 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.

“I think what I did well was with the help of my teammates. We look to play with each other and that helps us out a lot,” Henderson said.

The team showed their chemistry, and Coach Rekha Patterson explained that they’ve been planning events to encourage that. The team took Monday off practice and did an activity at Board and Brushed in downtown Cape to bond and give their bodies some time to rest.

The Redhawks have now completed a two-game sweep over Morehead State this season. They are looking ahead to continue their win streak at their face off against Eastern Illinois University at 5 pm this Thursday at the Show Me Center.
