Jillian Michaels' speech on Monday, Sept. 30, may not have been what most would expect from the fitness instructor.

Michaels was the first of five speakers for Southeast Missouri State University's Speakers Series. The Show Me Center began filling up an hour before Michaels was scheduled to speak.

Michaels opened her speech by saying that she wasn't going to talk about eating broccoli and chicken, and that if you want to be fit you should do two things, eat less and move more. She focused her speech on how to become successful, following your passions and how to be happy with yourself.

"No matter what it is that you love to do, the possibilities are endless if you follow your heart," Michaels said.

MIchaels explained that most people don't know what they want to do in their lives, and that most people tend to do a job that they dislike for the rest of their lives.

Approximately 1,600 people were in attendance to see Michaels speak.

"I love Jillian Michaels, and I've done a lot of her workouts before, so I was kind of interested to see what she was going to talk about," Southeast student Kelsey Rost said. "I thought she was going to talk more about fitness, but it was cool anyway."

Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS shoes, will be the next speaker for this year's Speakers Series. He will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday Nov. 12 at the Show Me Center.
