Thursday night in the University Center, students gathered for a silent disco-themed "throwback." With tables full of childhood snacks and knick-knacks like Silly Bandz, the Student Activities Council (SAC) strived to put on an inclusive event that aimed to foster a sense of nostalgia.

As students arrived at the University Center and were signed in to the event, they were given a pair of headphones with access to three channels: top hits, an alternative playlist, and a movie playlist.

Junior historic preservation major Bailee Porteous said that each pair of headphones came with the ability to change the volume, making it more inclusive for people who may be sensitive to loud music.

“With the silent disco, people can control the volume of their own music, because we understand sometimes loud music can be overwhelming,” said Porteous.

SAC also provided throwback snacks like Gushers, Sour Patch Kids and more along with toys like Silly Bandz and light wands and teamed up with the Game Club to provide nostalgic board games like Sorry.

Senior historic preservation major Mackenzie Opal said that the motivation behind setting up the event was to give students a break from the routine of normal class life.

“We’re trying to give a little bit of nostalgia, because we thought, at this point of the year classes start to feel a little dull, so we’re trying to give them something to liven things up,” Opal said.

Porteous added that SAC hopes students gain a sense of community from events like Throwback Thursday.

“We love when people come in and tell us they had so much fun, or they met so many new people. We just want students to feel involved on campus, we want them to feel like we are here for them and have their backs. We want people to make friends, meet new people, and give them a chance to really get involved,” Porteous said.

SAC hosts meetings every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the University Center, and students are encouraged to attend. As the semester carries on, SAC will be hosting more events across campus, including the Cardinals game, a movie outing in October, and Late Night Breakfast coming towards the end of the semester.
