The Southeast Missouri State University women's basketball team used a second half surge to pull away from the scrappy Lindenwood Lady Lions on Saturday.

Lindenwood (3-4) kept the game close for about 31 minutes of play, but the Redhawks (2-7) outscored them 16-4 during a 6-minute stretch to win 66-56.

"I was really pleased with our performance down the stretch," Southeast coach Ty Margenthaler said. "We haven't had a lead a lot coming down the stretch and I was, and my staff, were really curious as to how we would handle that."

Southeast used its size advantage to outscore Lindenwood 28-20 in the paint. Southeast also out-rebounded Lindenwood 43-33, including 16 offensive rebounds that helped it to score 19 second-chance points.

Junior forward Courtney Shiffer recorded her first career double-double and had a career-high in rebounds with 17. She scored 13 points.

"It was nice having a size advantage in the post," Shiffer said. "We tried to get it [the ball] inside, and on offense it was easier to get put backs."

Senior guard Karley Evans again shot well from 3-point range at the Show Me Center. After shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc on Nov. 29 against Arkansas State, she shot 4-for-8 with a team-high 15 points against Lindenwood.

"I think my confidence is going up," Evans said. "But a lot of that is just screens being set and the person passing the ball so it's really a team effort."

Lindenwood also shot well from 3-point range. The made 6-of-14 attempts including one with 14:48 left that cut Southeast's lead to 36-34 which induced Margenthaler to call a timeout.

"I thought we were being just a little bit lazy," Margenthaler said. "Quite honestly, I thought Lindenwood was playing a little bit harder than us and that really upset me. What I wanted to do is challenge them, and they responded and we started getting some stops."

Lindenwood's junior guard and leading scorer Morgan Harrington led all scorers with 16 points off the bench. Junior forward Sarah Schnieders added 12 points for the Lady Lions, Margenthaler said that Evans did a good job of guarding Schnieders, who is one of Lindenwood's top scorers.

Southeast has a week off until its next game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Western Michigan. Margenthaler said that rest will be important to the team after playing five games in nine days.

"This will give us a week to kind of get back to the basics and really work on our fundamentals," Margenthaler said.
