Greek students cheered their teams and laughed in turn when their organization’s act took the stage in a new event held during this year’s Greek Week.

The April 18 event at Academic Auditorium was the first Lip Sync Battle held by Campus Greek Life and featured fourteen chapters, competing in seven teams that included both a fraternity and sorority.

“We decided to mix it up this year and go with the Lip Sync Battle because we know that’s like pretty big on late night TV shows,” Steering Committee and Pi Kappa Alpha member Brad Baker said.

The Steering Committee is a 30-member group in Greek Life that coordinated the event, including Baker and director Kimberly Baich.

The winner of the event was the Delta Delta Delta and Sigma Nu team, with their lip sync of ”Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus.

Delta Delta Delta member Emily Doster said although she was knew who would be performing in the lip sync team, she did not know what they had planned, and she was happy to be surprised with the outcome.

“I was super surprised by what the guys did and I feel like they did a great job, so our dance was my favorite! Otherwise, my favorite dance was the ‘Dirty Dancing’ one that Phi Delta Theta performed,” Doster said.

The winner of the night’s competition determine the arrangement of the seating for Greek Sing. It’s a kind of privilege, Baker said, to sit closer to the judges, because it’s thought the enthusiasm of the Greek group will rub off on the judges and, to some extent, get them to view their team more favorably.

The performances were judged by a panel of five people selected from outside of Greek Life. It was comprised of three students and two faculty.

Competitors were judged on five criteria: costumes or props, presentation, creativity or originality, dance and perceived effort.

Baker said the rules for the event were flexible to allow participants to be as creative as possible.

The event began with the “Greek Gods and Goddesses,” representatives of the groups selected by their fraternity-sorority teams during the week, each leading their their chapters in their Greek chants.

In the past, Greek Life had held mystery events, but the popularity of the events was falling, prompting them to start something new, Baker said.

Songs ranged from “Lovesick Blues” by the “Yodeling Walmart Kid” to “You’re the One I Want” from the musical “Grease.”
