Transfer quarterback Daniel Santacaterina threw for 2,844 yards and 28 touchdown passes in 2018, enough to earn him the 2018 HERO Sports Fan Choice Football Championship Subdivision Newcomer of the Year award.

Santacaterina’s 2,844 passing yards rank 15th in the FCS and his 28 touchdowns are good for sixth.

The junior quarterback transferred from Northern Illinois and helped lead the Redhawks to its first playoff win in program history in his first year with the school when Southeast beat Stony Brook 28-14 at Houck Field on Nov. 24.

Santacaterina pulled in nearly half the votes for Newcomer of the Year, finishing with 9,608 votes, or 46.8 percent. Other Ohio Valley Conference newcomers in contention were Drew Anderson (Murray State), Zerrick Cooper (Jacksonville State) and Terry Williams (UT Martin).

The Redhawks finished the season 9-4 after losing to No. 2 Weber State in the second round of the FCS playoffs Dec. 1. Santacaterina will be returning to Southeast for his senior year along with inside linebacker and contender for the FCS’ defensive player of the year award Zach Hall.
