Student leaders swore in a new Student Issues Committee Chair and learned about an upcoming University Affairs Committee meeting with Student Financial Services (SFS) at a Student Government Association (SGA) meeting Monday, Oct. 19.

The Executive Board proposed Sen. Heather Hoffman fill the vacant Student Issues Committee chair position.

After a period of discussion and a question and answer session, student leaders participated in a hand-raised vote facilitated by Vice President Annie Martin.

All members voted unanimously and Hoffman was sworn in as Student Issues Committee chair for the 2020-21 academic year. Hoffman will be responsible for bringing student issues to the attention of campus leaders.

“With this position, I can do things that have a lasting impact on others. I would like to get more student input, as well,” Hoffman said.

In other business, the University Affairs Committee is working on ways to help students form better relationships with service departments at Southeast.

Committee Chairperson Ashley Stephan and the University Affairs Committee gathered student perspectives on Living at Southeast (LAS), a public Facebook group used as a resource for university students and staff to network and share information.

Stephan said LAS is a one of many main outlets where students share their opinions on SFS. More often than not, students post on Living at Southeast after they feel they have been treated unfairly when emotions are high.

She said the University Affairs Committee plans to meet with the department in the coming weeks to discuss how both parties can mend their relationships.

Minutes and agendas for SGA meetings can be found on their webpage. The Arrow streams every SGA meeting, Mondays at 8 p.m. on Facebook Live.
