President Vargas introduces vaccine incentive to SEMO students in email

Friday, August 27, 2021

On Thursday, Aug. 26, Southeast President Carlos Vargas sent out a campus-wide email announcing a vaccine incentive for students, which could lead to a week-long Thanksgiving break instead of the planned three day break. The goal is to reach a 70% vaccination rate of students, faculty and staff by Nov 1.

In the email, Vargas addressed the importance of being vaccinated and how it can not only protect the health of individual students, but also the campus as a whole.

Along with the Thanksgiving break incentive, the email included how vaccinated students can enter to win cash prizes of $250 and $500 by submitting a picture of their vaccination cards online or by visiting a campus office to show their cards in person. The cash prize drawings will occur on Sept. 30, Oct. 4, Oct. 18 and Nov. 1.

Unvaccinated students can receive a Redbucks account credit or Southeast bookstore gift card of $25 after receiving their first or second dose of the vaccine. This opportunity is only available to the first 2,000 students who take advantage of this incentive.

The university currently has three free vaccination clinics planned for the near future. The first will be on Aug. 27 from 10 am to 2 pm in the UC Lounge, second will be on Aug. 30 from 12 - 4 pm at the River Campus Cultural Arts Center Atrium and the third will take place on Sept. 3 from 10 am- 2pm in the Towers Complex. For more information about the clinics and current Protect the Nest guidelines, visit the university's website.
