According to The Center for Writing Excellence , “Helix” is an undergraduate and graduate publication of research submissions from all disciplines.

The idea is to give students the opportunity to create and develop research writing skills to help them prepare to submit manuscripts and research articles. “Helix” gives students a chance to get published.

“Having publication credits on a resume will often set you above other people with similar education as it shows experience in the field and a seriousness about the work that might otherwise not be apparent to a hiring committee,” said Jeremy Thompson, Writing Associate for the Center for Writing Excellence.

Helix: A Journal of Interdisciplinary Research

There are two contests, an undergraduate and graduate level. Submissions are automatically entered in and then decided on according to level of research writing.

Cover Design Contest: All the details can be found on the Helix Cover Design Contest page.

A research writing award for the undergraduate student - $75, a researched writing award for graduate student - $75 and a cover design award - $75.

“The deadline for submissions has been extended to March 24, with a grace period (3) of a few days,” Thompson said.

“Helix” was began as a way to give students from non-creative disciplines and focuses a way to gain experience in publishing and to get publishing credits under their names,” Thompson said.

According to an issue of Helix it’s first volume was published in 2001.

“SEMO students are all very smart, engaging people with a passion for their disciplines. We simply wanted to help them to express that passion in a way that would not only allow them exposure to the publication process, but also to give them a step up, so to speak, on their future.” Thompson said.
