A water main on River Campus broke leaving students without water and air conditioning for the majority of Wednesday, Sept. 12.

The rupture in the main occurred early in the morning, around 1 a.m., according to facilities director Angela Meyer. Cape Girardeau public works crews made repairs, shutting down water access to Dobbins Hall for the duration of Wednesday.

“The city was proactive and took care of it in a very timely manner and was limited to a one-day outage, and from our perspective it went very smoothly, so we appreciate the city’s efforts in making sure that it was minimal downtime,” Meyer said.

The water was shut down around 11:30 a.m. and turned back on around 4 p.m. Meyer said there was also no air conditioning throughout the Dobbins facility since the cooling unit uses water.

“I was stressed because I dance every day and workout every morning so I wasn’t sure when we would be able to shower in our own dorms again,” Dobbins resident Patti Meadors said. “We had no idea what was happening initially, and just saw the flooding the night before in the street. Just that while it was an inconvenience. Things happen, that’s life! We really appreciated how much the school did to make sure we were safe and clean, and the people who worked so hard to clean up and fix the mess.”
