As a junior multimedia journalism student at Southeast Missouri State University, the opportunity to step into the whirlwind of the National Football League (NFL) Combine was nothing short of incredible.
From the moment I set foot in Indianapolis, the energy pulsated through every street corner and every conversation. I knew I was in for something special.
Covering the event as a representative of SEMO, and probably the youngest person there, offered a unique perspective, especially as our very own standout athlete Ryan Flournoy was there.
I had applied to NFL Communications just a few weeks before the event, not sure what to expect.
When I got the email that I had been accepted, I could hardly contain my excitement. I made plans to travel to Indianapolis not knowing the magnitude of what I was in for.
Throughout my time at the Combine, I had the opportunity to interview some of the most talented athletes in college football alongside the most well-known sports journalists.
When I say it was a dream, I mean every bit of that.
Walking through the bustling corridors of Lucas Oil Stadium, surrounded by towering athletes and seasoned professionals, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement mixed with a bit of nervousness.
I was able to witness countless athletes chasing their dreams, and I now have the opportunity to follow their careers as they navigate their way through the NFL. How cool is that?
With each interview and each workout, I found myself drawn deeper into the Combine. From the excitement of the 40-yard dash to the intensity of the bench press, every moment was filled with emotion, a testament to the pursuit of greatness that defined the athletes before me.
Amidst the craziness of the event, I seized every opportunity to shine a spotlight on SEMO’s presence at the Combine. With pen in hand and camera at the ready, I did my best to capture the essence of our standout athlete’s journey.
I made a point to actively post live social media updates on Ryan’s performances throughout the Combine so that his friends, family, and coaches could get a close-up look at his success.
In an article on Ryan’s performances, Sports Illustrated even featured some of my tweets!
As I sat down afterwards to reflect on this experience, I realized it was far more than just a series of events – it was a story waiting to be told. A story of triumphs and tribulations, of dreams pursued and obstacles overcome.
In the end, my journey covering the NFL Combine was not just about covering the event. It reinforced the fact that talent knows no boundaries. Whether from a small-town university or a powerhouse program, athletes from all walks of life were united by their passion for the game.
Ryan Flournoy is a testament to that, and I feel so lucky to have been able to help share his story.
This experience was filled with unforgettable moments, invaluable lessons, and an unwavering sense of pride in helping to represent SEMO on the grand stage of professional football.
And as I gazed out at the skyline of Indianapolis on my way home, I knew that this was only the beginning for SEMO, for Ryan Flournoy, and for me as a journalist.
