During common hour on Sept. 29. students were given the opportunity to explore majors and careers in the Health field, at the Health Career Fair held in Dempster hall at Southeast Missouri State University.

Representatives from each college within the university were invited to come to the event and educate students on majors and possible careers within each college.

“This career fair is gauged for mostly undergraduate students, to give the opportunity to learn about health careers that are more than just becoming a doctor or nurse,” Dr. Heather McMillan, faculty associate for Health Studies and event organizer, said.

Some of these careers include facilities management, emergency preparation, and pharmaceuticals McMillain said

McMillan said the main point of the fair was to show students who may be undecided or wanting to change their major to a career in the health care field could be something that may interest them.

McMillan said this career fair at Southeast was just one of many career fairs that were being held across the nation that day for National Health Professions week.

According to McMillan, health care careers is a rapidly growing field that has more job openings each and every day.

“With the baby boomer generation getting older, the need for people to be working in the health care field is just going to continue to grow,” McMillan said.

Some of Southeast’s newest degree programs also were represented, such as emergency preparedness, environmental science and public health. Traditional health care programs also were represented for programs such as pre-med, nursing and communication disorders.
